(#55) Slings and Life Jackets

As we enter the 5th week of my post-ACL surgery recovery, I have two things to WOOF about today: A body sling and a life jacket.  Two new accoutrements (I love that word!) for my canine wardrobe.

You noticed I said “we” in the first sentence above.  While I’m at the center of this recovery, I would not be where I am without the help of my people and other humans.  Steve and Hoppi have been there every day with massages, exercises, therapy, ever-increasing walks, good food, and, of course, the occasional biscuit. There have been countless humans (friends) who have stayed in touch and checked on my well-being.

Uncle Bruce (one of our sunrise friends on the beach and the person of Booker’s) loaned us something called a sling. Anytime I walk the stairs in our home (which I started last week), Steve wraps this around my middle. He does not lift me as he wants me to exercise my leg. Rather, the sling is there to prevent me from slipping and sliding—and injuring my repaired injury. A bit uncomfortable but I have gotten use to it. Without it, I’d still be confined to the lower level of my house. (Excuse me, I mean Steve and Hoppi’s house.)

The sling–and a human guiding it–keeps me from sliding.

Auntie Roz (another sunrise appreciator and the person of Tater Tot and Latke ) and Uncle Gary invited us to go into a big blue body of water in their backyard. I kept hearing Steve say hydrotherapy. He put another sling-like item around my body and then helped me in the water. He led me toward the center of the water and I kicked my legs. Talk about exercise! Almost as much as when I used to chase those twerking squirrels in our backyard. (Can’t wait to get the clearance to do that again!) Anyway, the water gives my legs a chance to stretch, push, kick—all without putting all my weight on the repaired limb.  I hear it is safer this way. I did not like it but I humored Steve. Biscuits were involved.

This was after the workout.

These humans are pretty smart. And they care about me and my people. I am fortunate and appreciative.  A hearty WOOF to Uncle Bruce, Auntie Roz and Uncle Gary!

Who makes up the we in your life? Those humans who are there for you in tough times?

____________

Thanks for coming back to my blog. You make me happier than biscuits!

My book, Roxie Looks for Purpose Beyond the Biscuit, is still available.  I share stories and lessons about friends, family, and fun. And I speak about purpose as well.  (Steve says for dogs we might just want to call it “furpose.” He makes words up, I think.) Perhaps the book holds a biscuit or two for you!

WOOF!
